Colin Gibson's Hairdressing Corrimal

History of Colin and the business:

I started my apprenticeship with Cec Benson in 1958 at the premises of 278 crown St. In 1960, with only a couple of years into my apprenticeship, I was selected to demonstrate my skills in barbering, along with Peter Frickes, in the very 1st Apprenticeship Week held in Wollongong.

I worked with Cec Benson until I was nearly 21 at which time I decided I would open my own business. My first shop was situated at number 1 Railway Street, East Corrimal and I continued working there for 23 years. During that time I built up a great clientele of which most people were more than just customers, many formed long term friendships which continue today.

My departure from Corrimal for 10 years saw me working from my home in Wollongong. This gave me the opportunity to spend more time with my wife Colleen and to help raise our three young children whilst working together. The majority of my clientele followed me as my business moved around throughout the years.

As my three children matured , I decided it was time to make the move back to Corrimal. This enabled me to expand my business and also give other young people an opportunity to learn the trade. I opened a successful business at 170 Princess Highway Corrimal (next to RSL club) where we operated for 9 years. Apart from my regular clientele, many of my former customers gradually returned when they heard I had re-opened in Corrimal.

After 9 years next to the RSL club, the opportunity arose to move to our current, more central position, on the corner of the Princes Highway and Russell Street, Corrimal.
